Mali Noyes is joining us Friday evening for an exclusive evening at Wind Drift Studios. Mali is a professional skier and nurse who brings endurance, technical skill, and determination to big mountain skiing. In spring 2025, she set out to ski all 93 lines in Andrew McLean’s The Chuting Gallery, the guide to steep skiing in the Wasatch. She completed the project in just 47 days, setting a new speed record and a new benchmark in ski mountaineering. She’ll speak to the planning, fitness, risk management, cumulative fatigue, and community behind the effort.

Evening will include dinner from All American Dave’s, drinks, and a special presentation and discussion with Mali.

Zach Guy – Lead Forecaster, Crested Butte Avalanche Center

I’ll be presenting on a project that revisits the D-scale and demonstrating a new mass-based tool that aims to improve consistency and accuracy. Aligning on observed avalanche size is a challenge for both professionals and recreatonalists, yet size is instrumental to risk communication. I’ll be reviewing the background of our current D-scale and some of the challenges of applying it. I’ll present a tool I’ve been developing with several colleagues (Erich Peitzsch, John Sykes, Bruce Jamieson, and Ron Simenhois) that uses snow density and avalanche dimensions to quantify an avalanche’s mass. We compared results from the mass-based tool to pro-observed D sizes for 143 case studies, and I’ll share the results of that study. Finally, I’ll show how users can apply the tool by sharing a few examples and lessons I’ve learned from using it.

Date: Saturday, November 14

Time: Doors at 5pm, show at 7pm

Location: Canyon Lodge, 1000 Canyon Blvd, Mammoth Lakes

Tickets: $30 – includes 1 entry and raffle ticket

We’ll have our famous raffle, light appetizers and drinks, a silent auction, and ESAC merchandise. You’ll also be able to check out tables from some of our supporters! Tickets are available for purchase online or in-person at the door. Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

The silent auction will be live 1-2 weeks before the event. We’ll have stellar prizes from our generous donors! Auction closes at 8:45pm on November 14.
