This week the AIARE Pro 1 is in Mammoth to train our observation and risk management skills.

Students focused on Weather Plot and Snow Profile Observations early in the week.

Below is a photo snow profile from the Reds Lake Area looking at snowpack structure.  Even though we have low avalanche danger that doesn’t mean the snowpack is simple.

Snowpack Observations

Snowpack structure summary at a range scale:

Lower – In certain sheltered areas basal facets exist. Thickness varies from 0cm to 40cm

Middle – 1 finger to knife hard RG. 100-200cm thick

Upper – Surface FC, RGwp or

MFcr 1-30cm on surface depending on aspect to sun and wind, and elevation
