Did you observe any avalanches?
Yes
Avalanche Type:
Soft Slab
Size:
Size 3: Could bury and destroy a car, damage a truck, destroy a wood frame house, or break a few trees
Elevation:
11,300 to 11,800’
Aspect:
SE
Comments:
Two large crowns are visible from Bishop, one on the SE flank of Basin Mountain and one on the E face of Peaklet. Basin released at around 11,800’, Peaklet a few hundred feet lower. Both are in large hourglass shaped bowls, D3.5, R4. Judging by how visible they were from ~10 miles away, I’d say the crowns are large. These probably released in the last 24 hours (prior to 3/15 1530). There are also many slides in major and minor chutes off the SE flank of Mt. Tom, many of which entrained rocks, mud, soil, etc. Sorry, no photos.
