Observation Details

Observation Date:
April 23, 2022
Submitted:
April 24, 2022
Zone or Region:
Lee Vining
Activity:
Skiing/Snowboarding
Location:
Tioga Pass, cocaine chute

Observations

1.3k vert to snow line. high quality snow in the chute, 12-18 inches fresh from the recent storm. New snow was sitting on a layer that varied from a firm crust on the edge of the chute to more bullet-proof.

Rapid warming + thin coverage motivated an early turn-around to optimize for better snow over getting to the top. Didn't see any roller-balls where we were in the chute, but some snow falling on the east facing rock walls. Added one photo of a crown from a previous storm cycle and a small cornice above.

Signs of Unstable Snow

None reported

Media

Small cornice + Remnants of an old crown. Looked to be prior to the most recent snow cycle due to depth + lack of any slide path
Boot to thigh penetration in boot pack
Early turn-around due to warming
Taken 1 day later, Sunday. View of full drainage. Slightly more sun affect today & roller balls covered our tracks
