Observations

Left early to check out the Duck Lake and Pika area from the Twin Lakes TH. By 9:30 solar aspects were already softening, but still supportable for skis, less so for boots. The creek below Duck Pass is starting to become exposed, a good spot to refill water, and the snow bridges are still intact for now. We got to the base of Pika around 11:00, with very variable snow, and solar aspects as high as 11,700 were moistening. We didn’t see any signs of instability on Pika besides some rollerballs. On the way out we saw small wet slide activity at the highest elevations on the Barney Headwall, in addition to signs of rockfall. From underneath the headwall and back to the trailhead, snow was moist and becoming less supportable, often sunk through to the boot top on skis. Winds were calm and they sky was clear all day.
