Observations

Skiing out of the Lakes basin today under mostly cloudy skies and stop and start snowfall from 0800 - 1500. Mammoth Mountain recorded a high temp at 9,014' of 20 fahrenheit at 1300, with single digits last night. Temps stayed brisk throughout our day. Winds decreased throughout the day, blowing snow was observed but only minimally. Only Isolated pockets of windslab were observed today with minimal cracking in the most loaded spots. These slabs were still only Fist hard and were failing on the MF crust from a few days ago. Several rocks were hit on todays outing, as well as old snow surface that is now icy hard in these temps. Conservative riding seemed most prudent. Sluff was running decently far today and we watched someone almost get knocked over by their sluff skiing down Red Cone bowl. Excellent ski quality throughout. Above 9500' 25 - 40 cms of new snow were found with minimal wind effect.
