Key Points

We took a little observation tour to check out the new snow, but kept it mellow given the elevated avalanche danger.  Below are a few key points supported by photos.

  • New snowfall was approximately 20cm by noon today, which was less than expected based on the weather forecast for the area.
  • Surface form was Graupel up to 2mm in size until a change in precipitation in the afternoon to Precip Particles.
  • Wind transport was in evidence mid slope in the Sherwins and surface winds came from variable directions.
  • Ridgetop winds appeared consistent from the Southwest though our view of ridges was obscured at times.
  • Wind transport did not appear to be slab forming at lower elevations.
  • Test slopes showed some cracking underfoot, but did not propagate away from our skis except when we removed support from below before cutting the slope above.
  • Surface conditions were soft and fast in sheltered areas which made for pleasant skiing even on low angle terrain.
