Key Points

Toured from June Mountain to Mammoth Mountain via the San Joaquin ridge to get a handle on surface conditions on a variety of aspects and elevations.

  • Above treeline wind board, sastrugi and bare ground are the primary surfaces.
  • Near treeline there is still soft snow on E, NE, and SE slopes. Look for sheltered locations and moderate slope angles.
  • Below treeline warming had little effect on surface snow in this area above 9500′. Some crusts around trees from drips and on solar slopes with steeper slope angles.
