This avalanche tragedy may have happened on the other side of the country, but the conditions sound an awful lot like recent conditions here in the Eastern Sierra. Melt/freeze crusts, an inch or two of new snow, winds = isolated wind slabs amongst frozen surfaces ... perhaps a distraction by the threat of springtime sunshine and warming slopes existed .... This report is worth a read.
Be careful out there. We've had quite a few close calls over the past few weeks here in the Eastern Sierra ... we've been lucky out here. If there's a doubt, give yourself that extra margin.
Sincere condolences to Nicholas' family and friends.
