Snowpack Summaries to begin soon!

Wed, Dec 17 2014 PM -08:00

Snowpack summaries will replace the avalanche advisory this season. The new format will be similar to the avalanche advisory with weather, recent observations and discussion. The avalanche danger rating and avalanche roses are not included in the new format. Expect two snowpack summaries a week. The service of providing daily avalanche updates during and after storms are no longer offered.

The Forest Service will be offering several education programs this winter. Ben Hatchett from the University of Nevada, Reno will give a talk on forecasting snowfall amounts in the eastern Sierra at the White Mountain Research Station. Doug Robinson will present his fascinating findings on brain chemistry and flow in endurance athletes. The talks will take place on Thursday evenings; dates will be announced soon.

The movie, "A Dozen More Turns" will be shown in Mammoth. A discussion of the movie and David Page's recent series of articles in Powder magazine will follow the movie.

Rock Creek Winter Lodge will host an evening of good food and avalanche talks in the later part of February.
