Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack:

Wanted to get a sense of the extent of the rain-on-snow event, so went down to a lower elevation to check things out.  Started at the base of McGee Mtn at 6800' at 4pm, with thoughts that I would find a slushy saturated snowpack.  To my suprise, only the top 5cm was moist, even down at the lowest 6800' elevation, and remained that way all the way up to atleast 8200'.  The upper 1-2cm was actually refreezing into a crispy crust. There weren't any instabilities to note: wet, wind, or otherwise, atleast as of dusk.  Quite possibly things could have changed overnight.

-At 6900' on a ENE aspect total snow depth was ~120cm, ~50cm of which was newish snow from the past weekend storm sitting ontop of a firm crust, and the top 15-20cm of snow was from today.

-Air temp at 4pm at 6900', as well as 5pm at 8200' was 1° C.

-Calm winds down low, and some moderate cross slope breeze at 8200'.

-Light freezing rain was falling.

Shorty after 5pm on the drive north to mammoth, temperatures rose into the mid to upper 30s (they were ~30° 2 hours before), and rain in ernest began falling.  Upon return to mammoth temperatures were noteably warmer than when I left as well, and moderate rainfall had been falling for over an hour with slushy and wet streets and standing puddles.  It would be interesting to see how the mountains below 9000' do tonight in terms of wet instaiblity with the warmer temps and rain.
