Snowpit Observations
More detailed information about the snowpack:

-Route: Up Horsecreek drainage from Twin Lakes up East couloir of Matterhorn. back down.

-Good snow coverage all the way down to Twin Lakes.

-Multpiple hand pits throughout tour in areas with windslab showed handshears failing with hard force, mostly with rough shears.  A couple locations up high (~11,500) hand shears were cleaner, still failing with hard force.  Above 11,500' a couple small isolated locations with more recent shallow windslab that had shooting crack up 3'.

-Others in group went to Ski Doodad (Polemonium Pass).  They found handshears were failing with easy to moderate force with clean farctures from 15 - 40cm down.   North facing slope about 11,200', ~38deg.  Concerning enough to cause a couple of that group to turn around.

-Some small surface hoar development below 8,000' in sheltered locations.  Surface faceting occuring in sheltered locations as well at all elevations.

-A dozen small (R1-D1) point releases on West facing slope between 9,000-9,500' from today and yesterday, originating near rock bands, running ~400-500 vertical feet.

-A number of large creep cracks were observed in unusual locations, such as at 10,000' midslope, NE facing.  Large enough that a skier could fall in and maybe disappear!  One in particular was mostly open and visable, but also had edges that seemed bridged with snow that could fail under skier's weight.
