Trailhead snow survey:

Ventured out on the roadway again for a trailhead snow survey from June Lake north to Virginia Lakes Rd. A variety of depths with the greatest amount at the gate near the power planet on June Lake loop with 58cm. Storm slab tendencies within the new snow observed only at June (7500’, 7300’).  Tioga pass road was originally one lane. Lundy open to the Lundy Lake Rd and Lundy Dam fork (7700’). Virginia Lakes Road only plowed to the first parking area about ¼ mile from Hwy 395. Mountains mostly obscured June north. Traveled south to Aspendell where the mountains were less obscured. Visible strong SW winds at ridgetop from Wheeler Crest south with extensive snow banners and obvious snow transport. Saw some isolated cornice failures and small slabs failing below on recently windloaded terrain.

  • June Lakes, Elev. 7500 – 37 cm. Hand shears - Top 1/3, Moderate, planer, stallers. Winds SW/Mod to Strong, Gusts strong. New Snow – Fist, 4 Finger-, over Fist. Snowfall rate – S2 (~1”). Sky Overcast.  Blowing Snow – SW, Mod, Intense w/ gusts.

  • Earthquake Dome, Elev. 8300– N/A Road Closed . Previously 20 cm (8” +/-).  Hand shears - Top 1/3, Easy moderate, planer, stallers. Winds S/Lt, Gusts Moderate. New Snow – 4 Finger- over Fist-, Snowfall rate – S2 (~1”) Sky Overcast. Blowing Snow – SW, Light w/ gusts.

  • Tioga Pass (V-Bowl, Elev 7500’) 15cm (6” +/-) & Power Plant (Elev. 7900’)  50 cm (20” +/-) . Hand shears – N/A. Winds W/ Lite. New Snow – Fist-. Snowfall rate – S1 (~.5”) Sky Overcast. Blowing Snow – SW, Light w/ gusts. Extensive spindrift coming down the rock faces south of the road. Noted a debris field between V-Bowl and the power plant, ~D2.

  • Lundy Lake Rd., Elev. 7700’ - 44cm (17”+/-).  Hand shears – N/A , Winds Calm, Gusts Nil. New Snow Fist, Snowfall rate – S1 (~. 5”) Sky Overcast. Blowing Snow – Nil

  • Virginia Lakes Rd. – Closed, plowed to the first parking area ~1/4 mile from 395.
  •
  • Aspendell, Elev. 8900’ – 38cm (15”+/-). Snow surface shows previous winds form the SW. Winds SW/Lite, gusts Moderate with obvious recent drifting from SW winds. Hand shears – N/A , New Snow Fist, Snowfall rate – S1 (~. 5”) Sky Overcast. Blowing Snow – Lt, SW

  • Note - southerly aspects from ~ 9000 and lower that were bare prior to this storm now have 30 cm and growing (~6" to 12") new, with anchors and ground cover beginning to become covered by snow allowing for more snow transport where the terrain is open and/or predisposed to wind channeling by local terrain features, resulting in crossloading and top loading favored terrain features. Tender wind slabs anticipated.
