More detailed information about the snowpack:

Toured from McMurray Meadow Road to summit plateau of Birch Mountain today. Snowline is a 15 minute walk from the road, which is in good condition and is passable to most vehicles.

Snow conditions on the ascent were mostly firm, and with refrozen snow and exposed rain crust required use of ski crampons, boot crampons and an ax. Surfaces that had not previously slid (on the rain crust) had 20-30 cm of dry wind affected snow with a 5cm thick unsupportable wind slab on top. The very stout rain crust made booting difficult even in deeper snow deposits.

Conditions on the descent ranged from nice, edgeable wind board to icy rain crust, and everything in between. Most paths have already run down to the 2/14 rain crust, so this bed surface will again be in play for the next round of storms.
