While hiking the mountaineers route, roughly 2.5 miles past the split from the Whitney trail we encountered heavy snow. At times waist deep while on snowshoes. Hiking up the hill, we caused two large fractures in the snow at separate point about 100 yards apart. A small portion of the crack can be seen in an attached photo in front of the pictured hiker.  After making the choice to turn back, we discovered an avalanche had acured at a previous location about 200 yards below after our passing.
