Auction closes at 8:45pm on November 22. \n Silent Auction – Bid Now! \n  \nAbout Kimmy Fasani \n \nKimmy Fasani is a professional snowboarder\, entrepreneur\, and advocate. Driven by a love of snowboarding\, along with a commitment to equality in sports\, and a profound ability to evolve both as an athlete and as a mother\, Kimmy is one of the most beloved athletes of our time. \nBorn and raised in Truckee\, California\, Fasani developed a deep love for snowboarding at a young age. Her passion for the sport led her to compete nationally by age 15\, and after moving to Mammoth Lakes\, she soon met her now-husband\, professional skier Chris Benchetler. By 2016\, Fasani had reached the peak of her career\, earning accolades like Transworld SNOWboarding’s Rider of the Year. She is also a vocal advocate for women in snowboarding\, fighting for more opportunities and equal treatment within the industry. \nFasani became a powerful voice for mothers in action sports when she publicly announced her pregnancy and advocated for changes in sponsor contracts to include maternity clauses. Her efforts have helped break down barriers for women athletes transitioning into motherhood. In March 2018\, Fasani and Benchetler welcomed their first son\, Koa\, and the couple continued to travel and balance their careers. In 2020\, she and Benchetler welcomed their second son\, Zeppelin. Soon after\, Fasani’s life took a dramatic shift when she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer. Despite undergoing months of intensive treatment\, including chemotherapy\, a double mastectomy\, and radiation\, Fasani faced the challenge with courage and resilience. She has since been cancer-free. Fasani and Benchetler launched the Benchetler Fasani Foundation\, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit aimed at providing people who have experienced hardship with access to the healing power of nature. \nFasani’s latest project is the film Butterfly in a Blizzard was released in spring 2025. The film\, seven years in the making\, offers a deeply personal look into Fasani’s transformative journey as a world-traveling snowboarder and a mother. The film\, supported by expert voices in maternal health\, provides an honest portrayal of Fasani’s metamorphosis\, capturing the profound shifts in identity and her resilience in her evolution as an athlete and a mother. \nBeyond her snowboarding career\, Fasani has remained committed to causes she cares about\, such as Boarding for Breast Cancer and the AndMother nonprofit. Her journey is a testament to her ability to evolve\, persevere through life’s storms\, and embrace the challenges of balancing motherhood and professional athleticism. Through her work and advocacy\, Fasani inspires others to push boundaries\, prioritize mental and physical health\, and find healing in the outdoors.

He is also a licensed sea captain.    \n  \n  \n \nGreg Cunningham – \nGreg has nearly two decades of full-time experience on skis in the mountains\, including ski area forecasting\, patrolling\, guiding\, and personal ski mountaineering.  He couldn’t be more thrilled to bring his experience to ESAC\, and looks forward to the new challenges of public forecasting in the Sierra Nevada. \n  \n  \nMike Phillips – \nMike is a ski patrol manager and avalanche forecaster at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. He balances a passion for avalanche hunting at the ski area with a love for backcountry skiing in the High Sierra. Mike teaches recreational avalanche courses and dabbles with occasional ski guiding jobs locally. He has also been involved with the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center for many years as a professional field observer\, an avalanche forecaster\, and as the education coordinator. \n  \n  \nDawn Johnson- \nDawn Johnson is the Warning Coordination Meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Reno\, NV. In this position\, she is the primary liaison between the NWS and core partners in emergency services\, tribal entities\, media\, and the public for a roughly 36\,000 sq mi area encompassing northwest Nevada\, northeast California\, and the eastern Sierra. Dawn has been with the agency since 2004\, and in Reno since 2009\, focusing on how we can improve forecast messaging so that users can ultimately make better-informed decisions. Outside of work\,  Dawn enjoys cooking and partaking in outdoor recreation with her husband and three very active children. \n  \nClancy Nelson – \nClancy grew up in Mammoth with skis on his feet. His experience with snow safety started in 2007 as a professional ski patroller for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. He spent 9 years as an observer for ESAC before starting his forecasting career in 2016. Clancy spent 4 years in Montana worrying about deep slabs and surface hoar for the Flathead Avalanche Center before happily returning home to the East Side and ESAC. Clancy has been working as a member of the international working group\, cleverly named AvaCollabra\, which fosters collaboration among researchers\, software developers\, and avalanche forecasters to advance the development and application of snow cover models for operational avalanche forecasting.  \n  \n  \n Andy Anderson \nAndy has been a forecaster at the Sierra Avalanche Center since 2006. Andy’s past forecasting experience comes from southeast Utah where the snow is light and shallow. In previous lives\, Andy has been a ski patroller in the Northwest\, an English teacher in Chile\, a ski bum in the Tetons (funded by flipping burgers in Jackson Hole)\, a climbing ranger at Rocky Mountain and Mt. Rainier national parks\, and a climbing guide. When not forecasting avalanches\, he spends his time running long races and trying to keep up with his wife and son on the rocks and in the backcountry. Andy spends his summers teaching technical rescue classes and playing in the mountains. \n

His experience with snow safety started in 2007 as a professional ski patroller for Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. He spent 9 years as an observer for ESAC before starting his forecasting career in 2016. Clancy spent 4 years in Montana worrying about deep slabs and surface hoar for the Flathead Avalanche Center before happily returning home to the East Side and ESAC.  \n  \n \n  \nScott Quirsfeld\, MMSP – Scott moved to Mammoth from Taos\, New Mexico in 1998 to become a Mammoth Mountain Ski Patroller.  Since then he has grown to become a manager on ski patrol overseeing the Avalanche Rescue program including the Avalanche Rescue Dogs.  He’s also going grey maintaining the mountain weather stations.   When Scott is not ski patrolling he’s out skiing\, bike riding\, or enjoying the eastside in whatever way suits the day.  \n  \n \n  \nNata De Leeuw – Nata began her avalanche career as a ski patroller at Castle Mountain Resort in Alberta\, where she worked her way to becoming a route leader and eventually a forecaster. She then moved to Montana to study snow and avalanches at Montana State University. She recently graduated with a Masters degree studying the physical properties of wind transported snow\, and now works for the American Avalanche Institute. \n  \n \n  \nLynne Wolfe\, Editor for The Avalanche Review – Lynne is the long-time editor of The Avalanche Review\, an avalanche educator\, and a retired mountain guide. She can be persuaded by dark chocolate\, hazy IPA\, and strong coffee. She lives in Driggs\, Idaho\, with her husband Dan Powers and the Lucky Dog\, whose photo is hidden somewhere in every issue of The Avalanche Review. \n  \n  \n \n  \nBritney Whitlam\, NWS Reno – Brittany is a meteorologist and avalanche weather focal point at the National Weather Service office in Reno\, NV. She graduated with her BS in Atmospheric Science from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City\, UT in 2022\, where she found her passion in fire weather\, mountain meteorology\, and snow science.  \n  \n  \nDavid Reichel\, Executive Director at the Sierra Avalanche Center – As soon as possible after UC Berkeley\, David moved to the mountains. He took his first avalanche course that winter in the Rockies\, and he’s been exploring snow-covered peaks ever since. Back home in the Sierra he has taught about a bazillion avy courses and ridden his splitboard all over Tahoe. David also guides and instructs avalanche courses on Mt. Shasta and has spent over ten Augusts enjoying empanadas and powder in Argentina. In 2014\, he founded the California Avalanche Workshop. He has worked for the Sierra Avalanche Center since 2017 and been the Executive Director since 2020.  \n  \n \nNate Greenberg\, President of the ESAC Board – Nate Greenberg grew up in Southern California and began skiing at the age of two. After graduating from UC Davis\, Nate moved to the Eastern Sierra in 2000\, where he still resides (in Crowley Lake) with his wife and two kids.   \nAs an advocate for education and awareness\, Nate helped establish the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center in 2005 (for which he still serves as President)\, and then went on to co-author the first definitive\, full-color ski guide for the Eastern Sierra in 2008 (Backcountry Skiing California’s Eastern Sierra). In his professional life\, Nate served in official roles for Mono County for more than 22 years before becoming the Chief Administrative Officer for Inyo County\, CA in 2022.  \n  \n  \n \nSteve Mace\, Director of Operations at ESAC – Steve grew up skiing in Golden\, Colorado. He began to venture outside the gates in his mid-teens and never looked back. While attending college in Durango\, Colorado\, he continued to push his skills and knowledge\, earning his turns in the San Juan mountains. He has skied across the globe\, from Japan to the Himalayas\, where he helped start a ski school in Gulmarg\, Kashmir. Before moving to the Eastside to pursue his career in avalanche forecasting Steve worked as a ski guide in the Wallowa Mountains of eastern Oregon and as a member of the Snow Safety department at Mt Hood Meadows. \n

Raffle proceeds will benefit ESAC!\nAbout the film: \n“Spirit of the Peaks” is a film about the struggle for balance between two worlds. For Hunkpapa Lakota skier Connor Ryan\, skiing in Ute Territory has always raised questions about being in reciprocity with the land and its people. As a skier who connects with the land through sport\, he empathizes with the injustices that have displaced the Utes and ongoing colonization\, erasure and extraction impacting the Ute people. This story connects conflicted pasts to an awakening in cultural awareness that can create an equitable future for Indigenous people and skiers. The film was produced in partnership with REI Co-op Studios\, Wondercamp and NativesOutdoors with additional support from Salomon\, Peak Design and Protect Our Winters.
