Snowpack Observations

Skinned up low angle terrain at the mouth of Lundy canyon. Below 8100 ft. the new storm snow is about 40 cm deep and starting to cover rocks and bushes. It still feels treacherous to ski these lower elevation slopes because the new snow is soft and doesn’t offer a lot of protection from hard objects. Terrain above 8100 ft appears to have been above the rain- snow line yesterday with deeper new snow accumulations. I was breaking trail in new snow up to my knees. Ski pen 60 cm, foot pen up to my waist. I saw a lot of cracking around my skin track but there were some impressive shooting cracks that shot up to 10 m ahead or above me. The snowpack also was very talkative with too many loud whumpfs to count.

I dug a pit at 8560 ft. after I triggered an especially loud and unsettling whumpf.
