Toured up the North side of Smuggler's on an AIARE Level 1 with Sierra Mountain Center to look for evidence of windslab on W-S-E aspects, and windslab sitting on facets on W-N-E aspects. We did not find enough snow on southern aspects to give cause for concern (dry as a bone), but found isolated pockets of thin windslab (10-20cm thick) on NE aspects on exposed ridgetops that were reactive, failing clean in hand shears. These were very isolated and did not propagate. Did not perform any standard tests.
Ski quality was pretty poor on exposed Northern aspects, but much better down low where 15cms of near surface facets are sitting on top of a supportable base.
